Visit Lambermont’s Tree Angel: Carved out of the trunk of a dying tree by Andy Handcock, the Tree Angel at Lambermont Estate is a sight to behold. What better than handmade gluten-free crepes stuffed with fresh veggies?” – Echo Alexzander, adventure blogger. Cappy’s: “Cappy’s Restaurant is the hidden gem of the San Antonio food scene. A family can find something for everyone there, from Chik-n® Fried Steak to an extra-large nacho plate. Along with the mechanical marvels, you can visit the indoor exhibit featuring a library and an exhibit full of military uniforms that have been graciously donated to the museum. Another benefit? All of this is free to view, but donations are always welcomed to allow the museum to continue to expand its collection. There is more leisure to be found in the Texas hills. Down Count Road 2615 is Paradise Canyon. While it’s a great place for a picnic or a stroll while sipping a hot coffee from the Magnolia Filling Station, it is the clear green-blue of the Medina river that really draws a crowd. The sparkling waters beckon you to jump right in for a post-skydive swim. Paradise Canyon is also a great option for making a weekend out of your skydiving adventure, offering cabin rentals along with ample camping space. If you are going to camp, please respect canyon rules in reference to glass bottles and music. You wouldn’t want to sour another visitor’s night under the stars or your own chances at spotting a native mountain lion or any of the birds that call Paradise Canyon home. Why Can Skydiving Take up to 4 hours? A lot of people who skydive for the first time are doing it to mark a big occasion: an anniversary, major work or life milestone, dream vacation, etc. So, why can skydiving take up to 4 hours? Even for more casual occasions, you want to be able to plan your day. Maybe you want to squeeze it in while the kids are at school. Given that, a common question is going to be “How much time will skydiving take?” When you begin to look into the sport more, you’ll see varying time quotes from 1 hour to upwards of 4 hours. That’s a big variation and can affect any dinner plans. Hiccups and delays can start with check-in. We want to make sure all the i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed, so we may hold you back if paperwork needs to be completed. We ask our patrons to clear about 2-3 hours from their schedule on average, but there are many factors at play when it comes to time. Weather Delays A drawback to all outdoor sports is that they are very dependent on the weather. This is especially true with extreme sports, skydiving most of all. As skydivers, we are at the mercy of the weather to be able to safely conduct a jump. When you arrive, if the weather is not perfect, there is a chance it could pass by the time your jump comes. If not, we will have you wait around for a bit. The right window can take time to open, but your safety and enjoyment are worth the wait. Wind, cloud coverage, presence of rain, and even temperature need to align for the right conditions. If the temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s unlikely you will be jumping that day. This is because the temperature is going to be even lower up in the air, about 10 degrees for every 3,000 feet. This is the man reason why skydiving can take up to 4 hours. If we were to allow you to jump in these conditions, once you factor in altitude and wind chill, you could be jumping in -10 degree weather easily. Cloud coverage affects visibility, which can make your landing dangerous, and even a light drizzle is going to feel like hundreds of needles in freefall. Best to play it safe, wait it out, and jump in as clear of weather as you can. Skydiving Preparation A lot of your time at the skydive center will be spent preparing for your jump. Our instructors are going to ensure you are well equipped to complete a safe jump, no matter what is thrown your way. It may surprise you that you can’t just hop into the plane and jump out all willy-nilly. There is a certain je ne sais quoi to the technique. Part of your prep will be instructional materials on the art of skydiving. After reviewing these, you and your fellow jumpers will undoubtedly be full of questions. Our instructors are going to make sure every one of your questions is answered. They will not rush to ensure everyone feels informed. We will also walk you through the proper way to jump from the cabin at this time. After questions, we will check gear together. Gear can include things like protective gear and jumpsuits, but will always include your harness and parachute. The instructors will go over these and make sure everything is working in order. This will include ensuring your harness is well fitted. Besides the obvious dangers of an ill-fitting harness, improper fit can also lead to nausea mid-skydive. The instructor will also take this time to set up handi-cams to capture the memory for you. This step can vary in length depending on how many skydivers are in the party. Also dependent on party size is the time spent waiting to board the plane. Our planes are designed to take up 2 tandem teams at a time. If you are a single diver or a team of two, that will greatly speed up the overall process. A team of this size with perfect conditions, without any hiccups, can expect to be in and out within 2 hours. If you’re a family making the leap together, your experience will be different. Each ride up to altitude can take around 25 minutes. Add in the 15 minute average for canopy ride, and it’s not hard to see how that can add up by the end of the day. Even just three groups of two can lead to an extra hour of wait time for that third group. You’ll also be waiting for your group mates to finish their jumps. That means that even if you were the first to jump, you can’t expect to roll out of the skydiving center within 2 hours. Well, you could — but then you’d miss all the extra fun on the ground watching your mates! A Note on Waiting The waiting game is a favorite around the Skydive Castroville. We’re waiting on papers to be signed, waiting for the clouds to pass, waiting while we gear up. If we aren’t in the air, we’re waiting. We’re master waiters, because we know why skydiving can take up to 4 hours. As you can see, by the end of the day you’ll be one too. Seeing as phones are discouraged due to the high probability of loss in the air, we recommend you use this time to chat with fellow skydivers and the instructors. It isn’t uncommon for experienced skydivers to also visit the center. Listen to their stories and ask them for tips! Experience is valuable in this sport, and you never know who has a story. Ask instructors for tips on improving your technique, and watch your group members as they jump. If you fall in love with the sky as we know you will, watching others jump is a valuable way to further your skill. Pay attention to how they stick the landing or how they don’t. Compare it to yours when you receive your handi-cam footage. If you’re ready to take the leap, we’re ready to guide you. Give us a call today. Our customer service experts are ready to help you schedule your jump. If you have further questions, reach out! We are always eager to answer.
Can Everyone Skydive in the US? It’s difficult to beat the experience of skydiving. The question is Can everyone Skydive? The feeling of falling and gliding through the sky with the birds … the freedom and lightness you feel as you are gliding above the world and its problems Skydiving is food for the soul. If it were up to us, we would make sure every person on earth was able to experience it. While there are a handful of people who may not enjoy the thought of skydiving, there unfortunately can be restrictions that can actively prevent an eager person from skydiving as well. For some, it would simply be too dangerous for them to indulge in the sport. We’re in the business of safety first, skydiving second. That said, we will also make sure you have the safest experience possible. Sadly, for some this may mean not allowing you to jump. Yes, we want you to have a great time! We want you to have an insane thrill and fall in love with the sport. We also want to avoid any heartbreak on the tarmac — so we are going to be serious about safety. You’re likely asking yourself “Okay then, I get that — but what prevents you from skydiving? Are all of these permanent no-nos and I’ll be put on some ‘no skydive list’?” Good news: there isn’t a giant laundry list of what can prevent you from seeing if everyone can skydive? The free flying art and no, nearly all of these restrictions are temporary. The moment you are able, we want you to join us. Skydiving Age Restrictions In the US, you must be 18 or older to take part in a tandem skydive. The good news is that there is no max age on skydiving. Age can affect our strength and agility. A child, especially younger children, may not be able to easily control the chute even with the aid of their adult tandem partner. We also will not allow a child to fly in tandem with a parent. An older individual who isn’t in tip top shape may also have difficulties. You need to be flexible and quick on your feet to aid your instructor. So the answer may be no to can everyone skydive? You need strong joints to handle the impact of landing, much the same way you’d want strong legs and joints for a long run. But as long as you meet the minimum age requirements, we welcome you! You could come to us for your first dive on your 18th birthday (what better way to jump into a new phase of life, right?) and as long as you stay healthy and strong, you could jump with us through your 80s and beyond! Body Size Restrictions Body weight and body size factor heavily into skydiving. Parachutes, harnesses, and even the plane are rated for certain heights and weights to maximize safety. Body size can also affect agility and flexibility in the same way age can. While the equipment may hold up beyond its maximum rating, it’s a risk we do not want you to take. You are a far too precious cargo to take a gamble like that! This is why our maximum weight is set at 235lbs. Certain body types less than the maximum weight may not fit safely into the skydive equipment as well. If you weigh over 200lbs you must be at least 68in tall. Even if you currently are not within the safe weight range at the time, we will be here for you in the future! We do not want to discourage your dreams of flight. We are here for your comfort and safety, so please do not hesitate to contact customer service with all of your questions. Our experts will be happy to get you ready, even if the jump is a special treat for later. Can Everyone Skydive with Health Restrictions? Body mass is not the only aspect of your health you want to take into consideration when you want to skydive. There are not many factors that can prevent you from taking part in skydiving, but some health conditions can make the sport more difficult though not impossible. High blood pressure can cause issues with pre-flight anxiety and oxygen changes, even if controlled, but it isn’t a guaranteed disaster. Diabetes can require extra prep, but is not a hindrance. For most conditions, you simply need to get together with your doctor and let them know your plans. They will let you know what to prepare for and if it is safe. What you’ll notice in your research, though, is that tandem skydiving is surprisingly accessible. It’s a high intensity sport, but with a little extra attention and consideration, the sky is open to you. Glasses are a common ‘extra’ factor in a jump. It is not unheard of for a skydiver to lose a pair of glasses or a contact. Goggles are used to keep these secure so you aren’t flying high consumed by the $200 you’re going to be shelling out for a new pair and an Uber home. Don’t even begin to sweat it. Same for other disabilities we may come across. The skydiving community is welcoming and there are large sections of amputees, blind or deaf/hard of hearing individuals, and other jumpers with disabilities. Are there people who are not allowed to skydive? Yes, there are people who may not be able to immediately achieve their skydiving dreams. But can everyone skydive?, if you are determined to be a part of this community, we are happy to have you. Nothing should keep you from your dreams of the sky if that’s what you want! For those who cannot yet jump with us, indoor skydiving is always a good, all-ages friendly introduction to the sport. When you are ready for the real deal, give us a call. We want to say yes to “Can everyone skydive” We are eager to answer your questions. If skydiving is the right sport for you, we are happy to book a jump that will work for you. This is a great opportunity to bring up special accommodations and start getting the lowdown on what to expect on jump day. If the sky is calling you, answer. We promise that if there is a hold, it’s going to be worth it.
Best Time of Year to Skydive Your first time skydiving is a big deal, so What is the best time of year to skydive? You’re going to want to get as much out of the experience as possible — but what time of year is the best? Truly it comes down to what you are looking for, as each season presents its own set of perks and challenges. With a few tips and tricks, you’ll be able to pinpoint the ideal time for you to book your skydiving adventure in Texas Hill Country. Weather Holds Regardless of the season, sometimes the day’s weather doesn’t bode well for skydiving. A ‘weather hold’ is exactly what it sounds like. Sometimes, we have to hold off on skydiving due to the ‘weather. While we will do our best to reschedule you for the soonest time available, you may need to return another day if the weather is bad enough. What is the best time of year to Skydive? The weather plays a huge part in how your jump goes. Visibility, ease of flight, and physical comfort are all affected. A pleasant drizzle on the ground is going to feel a lot more like a dozen little needles at 120mph. Heavy winds are also unfavorable for your canopy flight. Skydiving in Texas in Spring What better way to start off the year? Spring is a great time to expand your horizons and try new things … so why not spread your wings and jump from a plane? Springtime in Texas is warm and sunny. You’ll often be greeted by clear blue skies, which will give you stunning views. You won’t usually have to deal with unpredictable cold snaps. Castroville happens to be the poppy capital of Texas. The brilliant red buds reach their full bloom in spring, particularly in March and April. At this time, you’ll be treated to a particularly stunning view below as you sail the skies. One thing to keep in mind with a spring date is the increased possibility for inclement weather changes. Unfortunately, this beautiful time of year happens to coincide with tornado season. Safety is our number one priority! If a weather hold is necessary, your date will be moved to a time and day projected to be better for skydiving. Skydiving in Texas in Summer Ah summer! Who doesn’t love summer? The warmer months are full of promise. They also tend to be a busy time of year for skydivers. Summer is a great time for both social butterflies and solo fliers. With the increased interest, it’s more likely you’ll be sharing your cab and time slot with others. This is a great way to build lasting bonds as well as fleeting, but meaningful, friendships. Summer is also a popular time for experienced jumpers, so you may be able to pick up a few pointers from repeat customers. Summer also offers longer days. For you, that means we have more time to work with! Instead of fighting the low winter sun, we can jump later into the day. If you are worried about the Texas heat for a summer jump, don’t be. Keep in mind that at altitude, the temperature is nearly 30 degrees cooler. With the addition of wind in your hair, what better way is there to cool off and still be active? As refreshing as a dip in the mighty Medina, skydiving offers way more to see. Skydiving in Texas in Fall Fall in Texas is fantastic. With highs still in the low 90s and lows in the high 70s, we’re a little spoiled with our extended ‘summer’. Even though the kids are back at it with their school work and you’re preparing for the holidays at home, you’ve still got a few last drops of summer in there. Take advantage of it and blow off some steam! Fall can be rainier than other seasons here in Texas, so it is important to keep that in mind. That said, Texas in the fall is beautiful. From up in the cab, you see all the brilliant leaves bursting into beautiful blooms below. As you freefall and those orange, gold, and brown leaves rush by, you’ll feel as if you’re diving into the world’s largest leaf pile. As you sail under your canopy, you’ll feel cozier than if you were curled up with a big pumpkin spice latte. Skydiving in Winter in Texas While colder than the rest of the year, winter in Texas isn’t too bad. The weather can be a little chilly, but not unpleasantly cold like up north. Mild winters are numerous — and surprisingly dry rain-wise. The only drawbacks we can see for winter are the shorter days and the naked trees. However, a plus to that is an unobstructed view of Castroville’s architecture. Winter is all about togetherness, and with togetherness comes gift giving, and maybe the best time of year to skydive. Often, the best gift to give is the gift of experience! It’s an irreplaceable, one-of-a-kind gesture that you can also choose to share together. Whether you choose skydiving as a gift, date, or family bonding day, if you’ve got thrill seekers in your life, this is a hard opportunity to pass up. As a present under the tree, to ring in the new year, or for your sweetie before a romantic night on the town, skydiving is sure to shake the winter blues. What Time of Year Is Best for Skydiving? It really depends on what you are looking for! Each season offers a unique experience, just like each skydiving experience is unique. Spring and fall offer moderate temperatures and lush flora. Winter and summer are full of opportunities to share this once in a lifetime experience with a community of others. The best time of year to skydive is the time that works for you. We are here for you! We guarantee safe skies, friendly faces, and full memories — no matter when you choose to make them. Weekend warriors to summer lovers, we’ve got you covered.
Is Skydiving Scary? Anxiety. Don’t you love it? The sweaty palms, the quickening of your heart, maybe even the feeling of breakfast trying its best to climb its way back out? Is Skydivng Scary? Yes. Anxiety is something we’ve all come across at one point or another in our lives. It’s also not uncommon to feel this when skydiving for the first time! Skydiving is really exciting and fun, but the part of your brain responsible for recognizing dangerous situations (the amygdala) has some serious questions. You’re choosing to jump out of a plane? You’re choosing to fall over 120mph to the ground with only a parachute and an instructor? That’s right we are, this is what we live for! Although safety is always our number-one business, old Jumpmasters like us know that most people are going to be nervous no matter whose hands they are in. Every one of us had to take that first step out of the cab and into the wild blue sky. The question is, Is skydiving Scary? ? How do you get to that first step? How do you get there when you’re so anxious you feel like you could just jump right out of your skin? Eliminate the ‘Unknown’ Factor Research is important. Research can calm your nerves faster than most when it comes to skydiving. That being said, it’s important to do the right kind of research. You don’t want to spend hours going down rabbit holes, finding the worst-case scenarios. It’s important to have that information of course, but reading only the worst information you can find is going to make your anxiety worse. Set a timer while researching! Allow yourself a half hour to look up the negative information when you sit down, no more. Once that 30 minutes is up, follow this with at least a half-hour of positive research. This method is great for everyday anxieties as well. What kind of research is positive? Reviews, travel blogs, your skydiving center’s YouTube page — there are endless positive research opportunities out there. When you start seeing all the different people who have taken to the sport, you’ll start to realize there is little to be worried about. Stop thinking “What if it goes wrong? “and start thinking “What if it’s amazing?” You’ll likely end up psyching yourself up so much that you’ll have anxiety about not jumping yet. You’ll walk in on jump day confident and eager, armed to the teeth with questions. Ask Questions So ask Yourself, Is Skydiving scary? Don’t let those nerves get the better of you. Ask those burning questions, even if you think they’re silly. Your instructors are here to educate and introduce you to the skydiving world. There are no stupid questions, and we are going to be spending a few hours together getting you ready. Asking questions is expected and encouraged! The questions may not even be about the procedures or your itinerary. Ask your instructor about their first jump. Ask them how they felt in the cab up, during their jump, and after on the ground! You may be surprised who has been in exactly your shoes before. Your instructor is one of the brave few doing this for a living, so they’ve seen the worst and the best in this business. Put your trust in them, and they will assure you a happy flight. Take Care of Yourself When you wake up that morning, the butterflies in your stomach will have you thinking it’s Christmas ‘99 again. You may be tempted to skip breakfast, but don’t. Eat a normal, healthy meal that morning. If you do need to keep it light due to that nervous tummy, that’s okay too. Just make sure you have something. Remember, you should plan to be at the center for 1-2 hours at least. If you don’t eat something before arriving, you run the risk of your blood sugar dropping, which can exacerbate anxiety. You’ll be flying through the sky. You do not want to miss out on the spectacular view because you were dizzy with hunger. No one wants 12,000-ft in the air when their belly starts rumbling for a granola bar! In-Flight Anxieties You’ve done the research, eaten a nice balanced meal, and you’ve done your training! You’ve been fitted for your gear and checked it over twice. You’re as ready as you could possibly be — and yet you still can’t shake those first jump jitters. You’ve still got that heart thumping in your ears. What do you do? First things first, breathe. Controlled breathing is important when trying to overcome anxiety! Take in deep, controlled breaths. Hold that breath for a couple seconds if you need to. When you exhale, do so slowly. Focus on the feeling of your lungs filling up and slowly deflating. This will ease most anxieties, but if you need extra help, grounding is a great tactic combined with your controlled breathing exercises. Is Skydiving scary? Depends. Grounded is exactly as it sounds: the act of becoming grounded. It brings you back into the moment and out of your head. Focus on what is around you. Become present by focusing on something as small as the feeling of your jeans against your legs. Build up the sensations. The wind in your hair, the sound of the plane’s engine, the beautiful earth below. Even if it can be a little scary, you are about to embark on a life changing experience and you want to be entirely present for it! Is Skydiving Scary? Maybe. Can You Overcome Skydiving Anxiety? Skydiving anxiety is annoying to deal with for a diver, but it’s definitely not uncommon. If you do your research, take care of yourself, and ask questions, you will know you’ve got this. Please, if you need any reassurance do not hesitate to ask us. We want you to fall in love with skydiving as much as we have and are happy to reassure you to help ease any worries. So we may ask you, Is skydiving Scary? We know first-hand what kind of amazing feelings an experiences lie on the other side of fear, and how sometimes we all have to do something while we feel scared or anxious. That’s called courage! We will ensure you’re armed with knowledge and guts, you might just even find yourself comforting fellow first time jumpers. You’ve already proven yourself braver than most with the interest in skydiving. All you need now is to take that first leap. Is Skydiving Scary? NO,
Skydiving Over Hill Country Have you ever wanted to visit France, but never learned French? Have you ever wanted to fly over France, if it weren’t for the whole “not having wings” thing? If so, you are in luck! Skydiving over Hill Country Skydive Castroville is rooted in the south of France. Alsatian settled the area a while back and still keep a bit of France. French country and small-town charm meet in Texas Hill Country. A hidden gem founded in 1844, Castroville is a cozy village outside of San Antonio that we are happy to call home. The rolling scenery of Medina County highlights the pioneer-era and French-inspired architecture. While you enjoy your stay, allow us to show you the view from above our little piece of France — right here in Texas! Lush and vibrant, a spectrum of green lays ready to catch you, inviting you into its arms 12,000ft below. This green quilt is made up of hundreds of patches that make for an unforgettable sight on your weekend getaway. Each location is rich with beauty and history, and we’d like to share some of our favorites with you. So what are some sights to be seen during your skydiving in hill country experience? Castroville Poppies Did you know that Castroville is the poppy capital of Texas? In flower beds, on riverbanks, and in the wild, millions of poppies blanket our town each year. There are many fabulous ways to view the flowers, and we recommend adding aerial viewing to your itinerary in celebration of these red beauties. Poppies can be spotted while skydiving over hill country. when they are at their best and brightest from mid-March to late-April. Their fiery floral faces greet you from below and are a welcome treat against all of the green hills, breaking up their gentle waves with a flash of color. Medina River Known by many names but most commonly referred to as the Medina, this river snakes its way through the hills and valleys of Castroville. The Medina River feeds into the San Antonio River, as well as into Medina Lake, a reservoir at the base of Medina Dam. It runs through many of our fine recreational facilities, butting right up against Koenig Park as wall as embanking Castroville Regional Park. For generations, the river has energized Castroville with its waters. When you are above, notice the houses that line its banks. It’s easy to see why early pioneers built their high pitched roofs along its calm banks, including Castroville’s famed Alsatian Steinbach House. Only from the sky can you see the influence the river has had all across the county, along with how it continues to connect the town with surrounding farmland. Cross Hill Stemming from European customs brought over with settlers of the area, Cross Hill is a symbol of the faith they brought with them when they came to the Medina Valley. Also known as Mont Gentilz, named after Theodore Gentilz, this is a gentle 1 mile hike located within Castroville Regional Park. While a peaceful place to rest after a long day, the Cross trail may be lacking in intensity for some. The 13-foot high, 7-foot wide cross that stands on the hill is unfortunately not the original, but an equally magnificent replacement erected in 1902. As you skydiving over hill country, look for the clearing the Cross calls home. If you spot it, marvel at how it peeks from the trees, watching over the town as it has for over a hundred years. Medina Dam Touched on above, Medina Dam is located within a popular recreational facility called Paradise Canyon. Paradise Canyon is great place to spend the day with your family, but if you are hoping for a look at the dam you will be sorely disappointed. The dam has not been open to the public for years, and even on the lake, there are strict guidelines about staying no less than 300 feet away at all times. While there are currently efforts to get the dam reopened to the public, at the moment your options are limited. Fortunately for you, the most exciting way we recommend to view the Medina Dam is in tandem with one of our instructors! Skydiving is one of the few ways to get a glimpse of the historic walkways. It’s also the only way to see the dam’s towering 164-foot walls in action as they hold back all of mighty Medina Lake. Medina Dam is a must-see from the skies, providing the county with irrigation and recreation since 1912. Skydiving in Hill Country … Is it Worth it? Where else can you both skydive and then celebrate with delectable French pastries? If you want a true living landscape or to see a little slice of heaven, skydiving in Hill Country Is the way to go. When you climb into the cab of the plane, your heart will be beating in your ears and your stomach may try to jump into your throat – but as you climb higher and higher, take a deep breath and look out at that gorgeous green quilt below. It holds so many possibilities, all of which are within your grasp. You just need to make that jump. When you dive in and see those clouds rush past you, it’s hard to believe you only have around a minute of free fall. At 5,000ft your chute will deploy and you will experience the magic of flight along with an absolutely breathtaking view. The glimpses of deer and javelina running through the valley, the twisting and turning of the Medina River, and the curve of the horizon before you never gets old. Whether on your first jump or 80th, you will always find something new when skydiving over hill country.
