Salads piled high with strawberries, fresh soups of the day, warm cobblers with ice cream … Castroville Cafe will please any palate looking for southern comfort. Take note of their sandwich names and ask questions, as you may learn some unexpected Castroville history.

Reimagined American classics have been lovingly crafted by executive chef James Herrera. From sliced brisket sandwiches — a Texas classic — to artisan hand-made pizza, the flavors are elevated with the use of the finest and freshest ingredients. If you aren’t in the mood to chow down, Julianna’s also offers an upscaled cocktail experience to wind down after skydiving in Texas hill country

If you are not in the mood for a full meal, visit the Magnolia Filling Station. This old full-service gas station located on Fiorella Street is a perfect selfie backdrop. The original gas pumps are even left in for that real retro feel. If you need a caffeine fix or a quick sweet treat, Magnolia Filling Station can’t be beaten.

Get ready to stretch your legs on a historic walking tour. The Steinbach House is a must-see for the Francophiles and historians among the group. The house was built in the 17th century in Alsace, France, before being transferred to its current home in the United States. The Steinbach House currently functions as a visitors center and museum, its lawn often dotted with the poppies that call Castroville home. 

Another must-see landmark is St. Louis Catholic Cathedral. The original cathedral was built alongside the settlement of the town and is important to the history of Castroville. The walking tours will allow you to see these and the dozens of late 1800s homes that decorate the landscape. Grab yourself a map full of facts about these historic buildings.

Another highlight found only in this town is Castroville Pottery Gallery and Studio. Also located on Fiorella Street and easy to find with its adobe-style building, this gallery features handmade rustic pottery, jewelry, and gifts. The gallery works with many different Texas artists and the pottery is more than reasonably priced for its quality. Castroville Pottery Gallery and Studio is a popular spot to pick up a little piece of Texas to take home with you. If you’re itching for more sky, check out The Shooting Star Museum. This small local attraction is open every Sunday 1p-5p but can be opened by appointment as well.  The Shooting Star is dedicated to the preservation of classic automobiles and early 20th-century farming equipment along with early aircraft. 

All exhibits are fully operational to allow visitors a complete educational experience, including an operational landing strip.  Along with the mechanical marvels, you can visit the indoor exhibit featuring a library and an exhibit full of military uniforms that have been graciously donated to the museum. Another benefit? All of this is free to view, but donations are always welcomed to allow the museum to continue to expand its collection.

There is more leisure to be found in the Texas hills. Down Count Road 2615 is Paradise Canyon. While it’s a great place for a picnic or a stroll while sipping a hot coffee from the Magnolia Filling Station, it is the clear green-blue of the Medina river that really draws a crowd. The sparkling waters beckon you to jump right in for a post-skydive swim. Paradise Canyon is also a great option for making a weekend out of your skydiving adventure, offering cabin rentals along with ample camping space.

 If you are going to camp, please respect canyon rules in reference to glass bottles and music. You wouldn’t want to sour another visitor’s night under the stars or your own chances at spotting a native mountain lion or any of the birds that call Paradise Canyon home.
